Towards an Understanding that Everything is Delicately Interconnected

I had the absolute privilege and pleasure of studying abroad in South Africa, primarily in the city of Cape Town. In the latter half of the summer [2016], I also had the opportunity to travel to Johannesburg and go on a pedagogic safari through my study abroad program in Kruger National Park. In short, it was an incredibly transformational summer that gave me a small glimpse into an incredibly beautiful country and the consciousness and ethos of an aspirational, resilient people.

In mid-March 2016, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi — whose 15 years under house arrest made her one of the world’s best known and most respected political prisoners — became leader of Myanmar’s first democratically elected government since 1962. Gaining a glimpse of the “Old Burma” before the inevitable tide of change sweeps over the country was the impetus for our recent three-week vacation.

The island country of Japan, located in East Asia, has long been a harbor of trade, technologic advance, and cultural importance. As home to over 120 million people, Japan ranks amongst the top ten most populous countries. The city of Tokyo is a bustling region of commerce and tourism. As the capital city of Japan, nearly 10 million inhabitants reside in Tokyo.

Ever since grade school, I was fascinated with Japanese culture. As a poor immigrant still learning English, reading Japanese comics and watching Japanese cartoons were my main source of entertainment. This childhood hobby sowed the seed for a lifelong fascination with Japanese culture.
