Chalk it Up: USC’s Harleen Marwah, MS ’11, dreamt up Chalk the Block, a creative community event where children from South Los Angeles were invited to come onto campus last February and decorate sections of pavement with their dreams. The event received the honor of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls' "Event of the Month" for innovative programming, and now it’s blueprint is being implemented at schools across the country.
Exciting Times. In addition to being accepted early admission to Harvard Law School, Dennis Ojogho, MS ‘12, was recently featured on the Harvard University Institute of Politics page, where he reflects on his work over the summer with the NAACP and its efforts in advocating the removal of the Confederate Flag from the South Carolina state house.
Big Apple Advocacy: Dennis Ojogho, MS ‘12, has secured a summer internship with the Legal Aid Foundation of New York, where he will be part of their educational advocacy for children with disabilities. Congratulations!
In September Ruben Harutunian, MS ‘01 entered the United States Foreign Service and is now training in Arlington, Virginia. This June he will begin his first diplomatic assignment at the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Dr. Perwaiz Meraj, MS ‘95 was promoted to Chief Medical Resident at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York in June. He will begin a fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine in July of 2008.
Tresha Edwards, MS ‘98 earned her medical degree in Psychiatry from Columbia University. She is now a resident doctor at the New York State Psychiatric Institute.
Speaking of Volunteerism. Dennis Ojogho, MS ‘12, was recently profiled on the nationally syndicated Fox television show, Live Life and Win, for his volunteer work with Chrysalis. Chrysalis is an organization that works with homeless and low - income individuals to help them develop skills that lead could lead to self-sufficiency, Nice work indeed!
No rest for the dedicated. A week after earning her master's degree in international policy and development from Georgetown University, Mireya Almazán, MS ‘99 spent six months in Johannesburg, South Africa working with a development consulting firm to combat child labor practices. Upon her return, she joined the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as a member of their Global Development team.
Kimberly Banks, MS ‘98 married her longtime fiance, Andrew Gray, in August. To ensure that family members from both sides of the Atlantic have a chance to take part, they held ceremonies in Southern California and will hold them in England in early 2008. She met Andrew while at UC Berkeley in 2003.
Congratulations are in order for Jaime Mendez, MS ‘00, who began his first semester at Harvard Business School in the fall. We wish him luck as he takes the next step toward fulfilling his goals.
